Fat does not make you fat

The low-fat trend started decades ago, and low-fat products remain a key focus for many people, but it’s misguided! Let’s get one thing clear from the start: ‘fat does not make you fat’. It’s essential for your health, all down to cell level. The thing with fat is that it’s not one simple category. When the media tells you to be cautious with fat it can be misleading. Why? Because fat is not simply fat. Those you want to keep low are saturated and transfers. However, coconut products fall into saturated fat. Confusing? Let’s focus on those fat groups that are essential for your body and which 95% of the world population is lacking in.

The type of fat I want to highlight today is omega fatty acid. The most commonly known ones are omega 6 and omega 3. These fatty acid is essential for your health. Omega 6 works as the exhilarator, waving with a red flag when inflammation is detected in the body. Omega 3 is the break, attacking the inflammation and stopping it. Taking omega supplements has been trendy for a few years but do you know why these fats are so important?

Starting at the top, your brain is made of 60% fat. Mostly the same fat as found in omega 3. Being deficient has been linked to mental illness, ADHD in children and has been said to be key in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

We’re also seeing an increase in PMS, PCOS and amenorrhea for females. I believe this could be linked to the fact most women still seek out the low-fat products. Fat plays an important role when it comes to hormone production. Also when we cut down on fat, we tend to eat more carbohydrates which has an effect on your blood sugar level. PCOS is actually more an insulin problem, not reproductive system. If there is anything that would make your weight fluctuate, it’s unsteady blood sugar and running out of insulin.

So fat can actually make you lose fat. How?

Let’s delve a bit deeper into your body and its functions. Your cells are built from omega fatty acid. A healthy cell membrane has a soft layer that makes it easy for it to absorb nutrition and get rid of waste products. For your cell membrane to be in top shape, a 1:1 ratio is needed between omega 6 and 3. Unfortunately today, only 5% of the world’s population is in balance. How did we become out of balance?

Due to the way we eat today with heavy oil and processed food we are getting more omega 6. Also, the way we mass-produce food leads to poor nutrition content of the ‘natural food’. The soil is dying and little nutrition goes into our plants. Our ancestors did not eat French fries, doughnuts, nor did they use seed oils when cooking.

We have an epidemic imbalance all around the globe. Today the ratio between omega 6 and 3 is 15:1. When there are in an imbalance in your cell membrane, it turns hard on the outside making it hard for nutrition to get in and waste products to get out. The normal cycle of keeping your cells young and healthy has slowed down.

What is the risk of not being in balance? Heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, skin problems, arthritis and autoimmune disease. We know that by remaining under the risk level of 3:1, you can lower the risk of heart attacks by 70%. For you who wants to look young, skin elasticity (for example) increases by 22% when at a healthy ratio.

What can you eat to get into balance? Firstly, skip heavy oils. Try to aim for food that comes in its natural form. Fish and seafood are high in omega 3. Just be aware that larger fish such as tuna, swordfish and king mackerel are also high in mercury which you don’t want to build up in your body. Always aim for wild-caught fish where possible as well. Plant-based sources are chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, Brussels sprouts.

I normally don’t recommend supplements, because food should come first. However, omega 3 is one of the few I do would suggest you look into. As always, make sure you get a high-quality source that has active ingredients that goes all down to cell level. Of course, always check with your doctor beforehand.
